CLOCK PROJECT...

"The clock project introduces students to the idea of designing around a theme. In this case students must design a clock in the style of a design era of their choice. Students are encouraged to develop their ideas to help them understand the difference between ‘copying’ and being ‘taking inspiration’. Pupils have a free choice of materials for their project in order to help them develop their resistant materials skills, though individual schools may choose to limit the choice for their students. To constrain the size of the ideas the projects must be able to fit into a standard shoe box."

The Project

To reinforce safety rules and good working practice in the workshop

• To develop students understanding of design eras and how to take inspiration from others work

• To develop confidence in the workshop and resistant material skills

To increase awareness of the importance of quality control and assurance

• To develop pupil independance and an awareness of the importance of planning ahead.

What's In The Box?

Each student pack contains the clock mechanism they will need in order to compleate their project. Students will need to design around this mechanism. A printed copy of the brief is also included which students will frequently reflect on.

Who Is It For?

This unit of work could be aimed at a range of abilities dependng upon the level of constraints the indivdual teacher decided to place upon the design work. I.e. if limited to only using acrylic and hand tools the project could be aimed at a Year 7 group. If students are given free use of materials and processes it could be aimed at Yr 10

Resources You Need...

Schools will requre the materials students are to be allowed to use for the project. We reccoment a selectrion of acrylic sheets and rods, aluminium sheet and strips, as well as plywood and pine. Depending on the year group pupils will also need access to tools and machinery within the workshop. The clock mechanism is included in the pack.

"This is a great project in terms of pupils having the freedom to develop their own skills in the workshop whilst helping them gain a valuable insight into tecniques which can be emplyed to design around a theme. The design process is integral to the project and will gain pupils confidence and understanding when it comes to their GCSE's."
